Welcome to the Castello di Campello for Italian cultural tourism at its best. This picture-perfect fairytale castle has been restored to perfection by its aristocratic owners (who have owned it for centuries), with your comfort in mind. It sits on a hillside in the midst of the “Green Heart of Umbria”, outstanding views can be seen from every bedroom and is a perfect setting for the lovely new pool. Nearby is beautiful Spoleto, home to some of the greatest art of the Italian Renaissance, and in particular, to the magnificent frescoes in its Cathedral painted by Fra Filippo Lippi. Of course, Spoleto is also known for the famed Spoleto Festival of Arts, Music and Opera (Festival dei Due Mondi)

The restored small castle has been divided into three by the three brothers  who are descended from he original owners (the larger and higher castle was destroyed in WWII). Your home, which is on two levels, will be in one of the gracious wings of the castle. It is composed of two Master bedrooms with large queen-sized beds, and a third bedroom with twin beds which are super-imposed. All rooms have breath-taking views of the picturesque landscape. There are two lovely bathrooms, both with hand-painted ceramic tiles, one with a bathtub and the other with a shower. The kitchen is compact but has everything that you will need, including a dish-washer, coffee-maker, and all the utensils for cooking your own Italian meal from local ingredients. The living area is grand and spacious, with down-filled sofas, antique sideboards, and a beautiful dining table.

On summer evenings you will enjoy having dinner in the garden where you will find a pizza oven, or on the large terrace with a view that goes forever, and a new swimming pool overlooking the countryside. For cooler days or evenings, you will enjoy lighting a fire in the old stone fireplace and settling in with a glass of Umbrian Red.

The Castello is a treat for year around pleasure and cultural enrichment, in the heart of one of Italy’s most historic and artistic areas. And to top it all, in under a couple of hours drive through fascinating landscapes, you could be in either Florence or Rome.

You also will be near to so many other extraordinary towns, filled with artistic treasures that you will want to spend not a week, but a season. Do not miss Spello, Todi, Narni, Perugia and the not far away Tuscan towns of Assisi, Montepulciano, Montalcino and even Siena. And when art gives way to more Epicurian desires, you are in the region of some Italy’s and the world’s greatest wines and foods. You won’t want to miss the various truffles in season at various times of the year. In Spoleto, try the restaurant “Il Tartufo”; in Siena, “La Taverna San Giuseppe”, and right in Campello the charming “Le Casaline” which you will want to visit many times. When you are sated, you will enjoy hiking, biking and horse-riding in some of the most splendid countryside imaginable.

Campello Sul Clitunno is also renowned for its thermo springs with curative waters and Fountain, mentioned in the works of Propertius, Virgil, and Pliny back in ancient Roman times, and later by George Byron, Corot, and Carducci. These famous waters form a charming little lake, which was sacred to the Romans who built temples there in honour of Clitunno, the god of the river.

Spoleto is best known for the world-famous Spoleto Festival which takes place every year from mid-June to the late July. One of the major Italian and international festivals, it offers the best in art music, and theatre. It was the inspiration for the Charleston, South Carolina event carrying the same name. Umbria’s Festival is a meeting point for Italian, American, and European cultures.

Campello is not far from Assisi, a renowned tourist attraction known for its most famous citizen, St. Francis, proclaimed a saint in 1228, founder of the Franciscan order and patron saint of Italy. It is also known for its famous frescoed Cathedral, and its excellent antique “Mercato”. For wine tourism, do not miss the town of Montefalco, well known for its full-bodied wine, produced with 100% Sagrantino grapes. It obtained the D.O.C. label in 1979 and D.O.C.G in 1992.

Although from May through September this Villa is only available to be rented for exclusive use, it will be possible throughout the year to rent individual apartments on a last minute basis. Contact us for individual pricing.
