Uzès is a small town with a large reputation. Its wonderful Medieval and Renaissance buildings and architecture are well preserved and tell its story with eloquence. The town’s thriving year round cultural activities, fairs, and festivals as well as its renowned weekly markets (Wednesdays and Saturdays) have contributed to its fame. The Guardian newspaper in England, a few years back, designated it as the second best place to visit in the world (the first was Cape Town), a remarkable endorsement for such a small town. The town has attracted many artists and artisans, as well as up and coming chefs, as the numerous excellent restaurants attests. Numerous attractive villages are in the surroundings of Uzès, and walks or bike rides or drives through the many vineyards to these ancient villages are very appealing. The long history of the area is perhaps best exemplified by the nearby Pont du Gard, arguably the best-preserved Roman Aqueduct anywhere, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Don’t miss the beautiful valley of the Eure wish has remnants of this exraordinary aqueduct, as well as a beautiful place to stroll, jog, or picnic. Laced with ancient avenues of trees, a flowing stream with swans and ducks, it’ss an idyllic setting to escape the mundane.
