A  stone’s throw from Uzès is the Maison Romarin, a treasure of  a classic French village house with a perfectly delightful terrace, just what you need to enjoy the best of  the summer pleasures that Uzès and Provence has to offer, and at an affordable price. Perfect for two couples or a family of up to six.

In a small beautifully maintained town with bars, a couple of restaurants, “Epicerie” to buy foods and breads, and even a hairdresser in the French Countryside just 7 kilometers from Uzès, this Stone 15th century house has been lovingly restored with charm, wit, and sophistication, and with an aim of gracious living.

Arrive in Front of a Medieval Church, park in your parking space, and proceed to the hidden stairs and gate. Up a few stairs, you will enter the terrace, the heart of sunny, summer living in Provence.

Now let’s tour the house. For the moment, let’s pass the Terrace, and enter this romantic, three story house into a welcoming and spacious kitchen, recently restored and designed for and by a cook. All the appliances are there; a large double fridge for enthusiastic trips to the market, an oven and stove of course, microwave, blender, and Nespresso coffee machine.  An island workspace, and an eat-in table, as well as plenty of serving ware means that you can either cook up some French meals, or buy them and bring them home.

Proceed onward to a Dining area with large dining table and chairs, then descend a couple of steps to a chic and inviting sitting room, designed in white and black with a splash of turquoise. The fireplace adds an inviting touch. There is also a powder room with toilet on this floor.

Upstairs to the next floor you will find a Bedroom Suite with King bed, and a bathroom with tub, as well as a comfortable sitting room with library and large screen TV  for relaxing. Downstairs from the living room, is another suite, this with King bed, and an alcove with two twin beds perfect for a couple with two children. The Ensuite bathroom has a shower, and there’s a separate toilet.

Back up to the Terrace: With comfortable cushions for relaxing, and a dining table for dining, you can picture yourself relaxing with your morning coffee and croissant, fresh from the bakery, or a summer lunch with local tapenades and cheese from the markets, complimented of course by the local Rosé. After lunch,  head out for some sight-seeing, hiking, biking, swimming or kayaking in the river Gardon, under the Pont du Gard, or just curl up with a book under the umbrella and catch a small Siesta.  Or read your email; of course there is WIFI.

And, then there is Uzès: Uzès is a small town with a large reputation. Its wonderful buildings and architecture, along with its thriving cultural activities, and renowned weekly markets (Wednesdays and Saturdays) have contributed to its fame. A few years back, the Guardian newspaper in England designated it as the second best place to visit in the world (the first was Cape Town), a remarkable endorsement for such a small town! The New York Times recently included Uzès in the list of 52 best places to visit that year. The town has attracted many artists and artisans, as well as up and coming chefs, as the numerous excellent restaurants attest. Numerous attractive villages are in the surroundings of Uzès, and walks or bike rides or drives through the many vineyards to these ancient villages are very appealing. The long history of the area is perhaps best exemplified by the nearby Pont du Gard, arguably the best-preserved Roman Aqueduct anywhere, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Further afield lie all of the glorious attractions of Provence and the Languedoc. The historic city of Nîmes, with its remarkable Roman Arena and the Maison Carrée Roman temple, and lovely fountain gardens, only 20 minutes away. Avignon the City of the Popes on the River Rhone is 45 minutes away. Within an hour’s drive lie ancient Arles, lovely St. Remy, dramatic Les Baux, the lovely Camargue, thriving Montpellier, while a bit further offers Aix, Cassis, Marseille, and the Luberon. However, apart from the sites to visit, there is the incontestable leisure to be derived from wandering through Provence and its backwaters, enjoying the scenery, the history, the food and the wines – an unmatched experience.
