Charleston, South Carolina was first settled in the Sixteenth century; in 1670 a permanent English settlement was established on the coast near present day Charleston. Shortly after an influx of the French Huguenots arrived seeking refuge. They brought a French culture that is still visible.

By the time of the American Revolution, South Carolina was one of the richest colonies in America. Elegant plantations and gardens derived from the eras of rice, indigo and cotton can be visited. More Revolutionary War battles and skirmishes were fought in South Carolina than any other state, including major engagements at Sullivan's Island, Camden, Kings Mountain, and Cowpens. The Civil War began when Confederate troops fired on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harborr on April 12, 1861.
Charleston is noted for its Spoleto Festival, which offers, theatre, opera, dance and the art exhibits.
