Calvi di Umbria is a 45 minutes drive from Rome and 80 kilometres from Perugia. The area was inhabited in Roman times, but only developed as an urban centre in the High Middle Ages. Calvi was a fiefdom of the Orsini and then of the Anguillara families. The main attractions are the church of Santa Maria, with an elegant Late Renaissance baptisal font, and the church of Sant'Antonio. In the neighbourhood are the remains of a convent erected by St. Francis in the early 13th century. There are a wealth of towns to visit nearby including Narni (inspiration for the Narnia series), Terni, Amelia, Orvieto, Perugia, Asissi, Todi, and so many more. For nature and sports lovers, there are walks, trekking, trails offering numerous excursions, as well as descents to caves, mountain biking, canoeing and rafting. For wine tourism, do not miss the town of Montefalco,well known for its full-bodied wine, produced with 100% Sagrantino grapes. It obtained the D.O.C. label in 1979 and D.O.C.G in 1992.
