St. Jean de Luz lies close to the Spanish border, in the Southwest corner of France.This is of course, Basque country, yet another culture to explore in addition to French and Spanish. There is no shortage of museums, châteaux, historic sites and restaurants in the area. There is wonderful walking and hiking in the immediate area and in the very close foothills of the Pyrenees. There are caves, nature parks and animal parks, boat trips along the coast, casinos, horse shows and cross country horse riding, spectacles with bulls, canoeing and kayaking in the river or the sea, rafting, surfing, sailing, miniature golf, a train ride up a mountain, hang-gliding, an acrobatic trail through a forest, underwater diving along the coast, to name just a few. It’s a golfer’s delight, with three courses within 10 minutes, and another 7 available in the region. For the less active there are spas, art galleries and great shopping.
Biarritz and Bayonne are some 25km away. RyanAir flies to nearby Bayonne. Many airlines fly to Biarritz. The Spanish border is a few minutes, and the intriguing Spanish port city of San Sebastian is only about 30km away. Bilbao, with its remarkable Guggenheim Museum is an hour and a half. Add a wonderful climate, and the result is clear – this is an extraordinary opportunity for a great vacation.
